I can then login, close the lid, and reconnect the USB adapter, and the external display lights up perfectly. If I disconnect the USB adapter and open the lid, the login screen appears on the internal display just like it should. Now when I restart in clamshell mode, the external display remains black and doesn't start up. I've installed the latest driver from j5Create Catalina compatibleand I've given the necessary System Preferences permission requires permission for screen recording. Since upgrading to Catalina yesterday, that's no longer true. In Mojave, before the update to Catalina, I could restart the Mac in clamshell mode with no problems, the display would fire right up to the progress bar as if it were the internal display.
